Marie-Rose Smetryns

Marie-Rose Smetryns combines watercolour methods with water-mixable oil paint and palette-knife techniques on linen.

Marie-Rose Smetryns spent many years working in watercolour, drawn to transparent colour and the unpredictability of wet-on-wet technique. Wanting to bring that quality onto canvas, she began adapting watercolour methods to linen.

She now works with water-mixable oil paint and experiments with both water and turpentine as solvents. Her recent practice often combines the flow and transparency associated with watercolour with more traditional oil painting, including undiluted paint applied with a palette knife.
