Caroline Martens

Caroline Martens creates sculpture and ceramics inspired by nature, the human figure, vulnerability and the expressive possibilities of clay.

Caroline Martens began in painting before moving toward sculpture and ceramics. Clay became her preferred material because of its softness, resilience and ability to respond directly to the hand. She works both by modelling figures and by throwing forms on the wheel.

Nature, the human figure and human vulnerability are recurring sources of inspiration, with the feminine and the impulsive often present in the work. Martens values imperfection as a source of character and emotion. She trained in sculpture in Ghent and ceramics in Waasmunster, alongside specialist workshops in wheel throwing.
